Nneka Elise Egbuna crea la seva pròpia part tot escrivint cançons provinents de
les experiències viscudes per tal d’aportar-nos el seu propi punt de vista
sobre diferents aspectes socials. Soul is
heavy (2011) és el seu tercer àlbum després de Victim of the truth (2005) i Not
longer at ease (2008). Tal i com obre el seu nou disc amb My home “I don't know what tomorrow will be, where do I go?”. I ara ella ha
entrat directament als nostres cors per tal de sacsejar les nostres ments.
Ara és el torn de Soul is heavy, caminant
pel reggae, el hip hop, el R&B modern i el soul més vintage. “Black Africa, we still survive, we
still will rise for the world needs us to be America? This soul is heavy, the
little you have left to me,I charge to function in your madness, I am… in your
madness”canta en la cançó que dóna títol al disc, invocant revolucionaris
nigerians històrics com ara including Ken
Saro-Wiwa, Isaac Boro and Jaja of Opobo i expressant la seva
frustració al veure que l’Àfrica continua patint les mateixos mals una i una
altra vegada, és a dir, l’opressió, la corrupció, l’explotació... I ella no
para de preguntar-se pels motius de tot plegar, sense deixar de banda els seus
sentiments en temes com Do you love me “Do you love me now, Now that
everything has been said and done, Do you love me, now that I function in your
madness, Do you love me now, for your love is so cold, Oh Sodom and Gomorrah
caution !!Do you love me, now that I am no longer me”. Però ella no deixa mai de ser ella mateixa, com ella explica "I am what you
hear, I wouldn't be able to separate my music from me." I ara no ens en podem separar.
Nneka nasqué a Warri, a la
regió del delta de Nigèria, el 1980. Va viure el tribalisme i les enormes
diferències socials i de distribució de la riquesa. "All that has a lot to do with why I am the way I am, despite
the fact that I have now been able to travel a great deal, and see the world
from a different angle." Va deixar Nigèria als
18 anys, quan es va traslladar a Hamburg, Alemanya, país de la seva mare, per
iniciar els estudis d’antropologia. Allà, el 2003, va conèixer el productor i
creador de ritmes hip hop DJ Farhot iniciant una col·laboració que va donar un
primer fruit en el EP The Uncomfortable
Truth. Com ella mateixa explica "I'm
always having little battles in my mind, I'm the kind of person who always
questions things. It has a lot to do with the way I brought up, and my
surroundings." Finalment, el 2005, Nneka va publicar el seu
disc de debut, Victim of the truth, elogiat
per tota la premsa.
